Our Salvation is not of Works but on the Basis of Faith Alone
We’re in chapter 4 of Romans and from the Old Testament, Paul is seeking to prove three basic points related to obtaining righteousness.
First, Paul proved that salvation has always been a matter of faith, not works. He used the example of Abraham as his proof. Abraham was credited with righteousness because he believed in God to keep a promise concerning a future son. He wasn’t credited on the basis of his works, therefore Abraham proves works are not the way to righteousness, it is on the basis of faith. Was Abraham declared righteous before or after he was circumcised?
Before the Law, saved by grace through faith. After the Law, same thing. The Law did not have any impact on how we are saved. Some have asked, is God’s blessings for the Jew or for the Gentile also? There were some Jews in Paul’s day and probably some Orthodox Jews today that are probably thinking God may have had two systems for salvation. Maybe for the Gentiles God had this system of faith. But for the Jews, by following the Law was meant to be something like faith plus works. Or just works, period. Could it be possible that there are really two systems involved here. And Paul says let’s consider when Abraham received his declaration of righteousness. Continue reading
Blessed Are Those Whose Sins Are Covered
So Paul continues his explanation of Old Testament proofs by introducing his second major Old Testament example: David
Romans 4:6-8 **
6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
And whose sins are covered;
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”
